3 Options for an Online M.Ed. in Mississippi

Mississippi College’s School of Education offers three options for an online Master of Education (M.Ed.):

1. M.Ed. in Elementary Education
2. M.Ed. in Special Education
3. M.Ed. in Educational Leadership

M.Ed. in Elementary Education Online

The M.Ed. in Elementary Education online program offers courses that will enable you to provide enriching instruction to elementary students. You’ll gain the knowledge and skills essential for curriculum development and learn about current research and theory relevant to elementary teaching methodologies. Students will need to complete a total of 30 credit hours for the degree.

This program prepares educators to become education researchers, resource teachers, team leaders or elementary instruction specialists. It also prepares educators for an advanced degree such as a Ph.D. or an Ed.D.

Coursework prepares students to comprehensively teach subjects required in elementary schools. EDU 6503, Teaching Elementary and Junior High Mathematics, for example, provides instruction on teaching mathematics. EDU 6524, Teaching Skills of Reading and Comprehension, covers methods of teaching reading skills and comprehension, as well as diagnosing and remedying student issues with reading comprehension.

EDU 6525, Studies in the Teaching of Elementary School Language, covers instruction on language arts for the elementary grades. EDU 6528, Social Studies Education in the Elementary School, covers instruction in social studies in the elementary classroom along with ways to adapt teaching methods to specific school conditions.

M.Ed. in Special Education Online

The M.Ed. in Special Education online program is intended for educators who have a passion for helping students with exceptional needs. Courses cover the cognitive and psychosocial needs of students who are mildly or moderately handicapped for educators at the preschool, elementary and secondary levels. Candidates must complete a total of 30 credit hours to earn this degree.

Holders of an M.Ed. in Special Education can apply for a Special Ed Mild/Moderate K-12 endorsement on their license as well as a Class AA license upgrade.

Coursework covers the characteristics of special needs students and how to individualize their programs. EDU 5445, Characteristics of Students with Mild/Moderate Learning Problems, for example, covers the cognitive and psychosocial needs of those students. EDU 5455, Individualized Programming for Students with Mild/Moderate Learning Problems, covers the strategies and materials used in planning and implementing individualized programs.

EDU 5457, Teaching Students with Moderate Learning Problems, examines characteristics of students who have been diagnosed with autism, have severe communication problems, are mentally challenged or have mild behavioral problems, and/or have other pervasive developmental difficulties. It explores methods of teaching students in kindergarten through secondary school.

M.Ed. in Educational Leadership Online

The M.Ed. in Educational Leadership provides experienced teachers, school administrators and school district personnel with the skills and knowledge to lead. Students must complete a total of 39 credit hours to earn this degree.

Degree holders can serve as education administrators, superintendents or site coordinators.

Students can also apply for a K-12 administrator endorsement and an upgrade to an AA license upon submission of passing scores from the School Leadership Licensure Assessment (SLLA).

Coursework prepares students for all aspects of organizational leadership. EDU 6518, Personal/Interpersonal Dimension of Leadership, for example, explores the significance of interpersonal connections within educational institutions. EDU 6526, Instructional Dimension of Leadership, examines current research and theory related to curriculum instruction, assessment and special programs across all grades, with particular emphasis on the administrator’s role as instructional leader. EDU 6527, Organizational Dimension of Educational Leadership, targets the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary to lead. It includes 90 hours of clinical experience.

The M.Ed. in Educational Leadership program also includes EDU 6536, Focused Internship, which consists of 300 internship hours and 180 clinical hours. The course is the culmination of the program’s training and requires the student to demonstrate a synthesis of knowledge and skills while in a working educational environment. In addition to those activities, interns come back to Mississippi College every month to meet with their cohort group and supervisor. During these sessions, they participate in seminars to reflect on their experiences.

Faith-Centered Learning in a Flexible Environment

All School of Education programs at Mississippi College are faith-based and Christ-centered. The courses are transcultural.

Each of these M.Ed. program options is designed for maximum flexibility. Program candidates can continue to work and earn as they learn. Candidates can complete the online courses at their convenience, from anywhere with an internet connection. The programs also offer multiple start dates during the year, so educators do not have to enroll in fall or spring, when their schedules can become particularly busy. The flexibility maximizes their chances of success.

Mississippi College offers three online M.Ed. degrees: Elementary Education, Special Education and Educational Leadership. Each prepares educators to enrich the lives of students, fellow educators and administrators.
