Admissions

The School of Education admission process has specific requirements that students must meet to enroll in the Education Specialist in Educational Leadership – Curriculum & Instruction track online program. Education Specialist in Educational Leadership – C&I track Online Requirements

  • Must possess a master's level permanent teaching license. The master's degree and license must be in an area of professional education. A photocopy of the valid license is required.
  • Must meet all general requirements for admission to the graduate school at Mississippi College
  • No GRE required
  • Must have a 3.25 GPA on all prior graduate work
  • Must submit School District Verification Form
  • Must supply three letters of recommendation from school administrators familiar with applicant's character, scholarship and potential for successful completion of the program. Please have your recommender complete the recommendation form and send to [email protected].
  • Must have a minimum of three years of teaching experience on the permanent license (applicant can apply if he/she will have three complete years by start of program). Please complete the Verification Form and email to [email protected].
  • Send all official transcripts from previously attended colleges or universities to the MC Grad Admissions office.

To be prepared while enrolled in first course:

  • Prepare a portfolio showing writing sample, letter of communication and examples of leadership experience (in or out of state)
  • Entrance interview with program advisor (can be done via Skype/Zoom)

To be maintained during program:

  • After 12 hours, must have and maintain a 3.25 GPA in program until completion
  • As an exit requirement, must defend research-based project completed during the Ed.S. Program

Courses

To complete the Education Specialist in Educational Leadership – Curriculum & Instruction track online program, students must complete 16 semester hours of core courses, 17 semester hours of anchor courses and 8 semester hours of C&I courses for a total of 41 credit hours.

The introductory course serves to orient students about the graduate expectations at Miss College, the EDS guidelines in Teacher Education and Leadership (TEL), the usage of the Statistical Software Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), licensure and SLLA mandates, action research expectations and topic selection, practicum-internship guidelines, TK20-Watermark purchase and orientation on the usage for online portfolio development and data collection, and the TEL's graduation policies.

The continuation in advanced educational research is the application of the students' theoretical plans made in EDU 7501. Further, the introduction chapter, which supports the approved topic, and the literature review, which is written from peer-reviewed empirical research, are reviewed. Thereafter, the methodology is built around approved research questions and directed hypothesis testing. The expectation is for students to implement their research plans, complete the data collection, complete the data analysis using SPSS, and make conclusions based on their research findings. A final grade is issued in EDU 7500, after all expectations for the course have been successfully completed. A letter grade is issued in EDU 7501, after EDU 7500 has been successfully completed.

Statistics Methods will be investigated with a basic review of statistical measures, variable relations, inferences about variables, multiple comparisons of data, and trend analyses. Additionally, there will be a focus on case study analyses and synthesis activities for the further development of skills in statistical problem solving using SPSS (Statistical Software Package for the Social Sciences).

Engaged Learning will provide an emphasis on creating learning opportunities that address the brain’s need for meaning, patterns and connections. While addressing appropriate levels of learning, age-appropriate teaching strategies and the science of learning, teachers will focus on creating a classroom climate conducive to learning for all students. Topics will also include concepts of teaching, learner characteristics, learning environment designs and effective teaching. Research in cognition, learning and teaching will form the foundation for the course.

A study of the knowledge, skills and values that are necessary to identify organizational constructs, develop a vision and purpose with others for the organization, and exercise leadership processes to achieve the common goals for the organization.

A study of the elements and concepts of administering fiscal, physical and human resources within an organization. The importance of effective communication with the various cultures in the community to build school structures is emphasized.

Advanced study of research designs and development of research projects at the school-district level to develop skills related to writing research reports, project proposals, self-studies and grant writing. In subsequent semesters, students will enroll in EDU 7500 until the research project is complete. Until completion, a letter grade of (PR) will be given for EDU 7501.

A study of the interrelationships among federal, judicial, state and local governing structures that affect the decision and judgment parameters of operating a school district and the impact of emerging legal issues on future educational policies.

The goal of the course is to develop competencies in the area of using a wide variety of data to make effective decisions at the building and district levels.
