The Education Specialist in Educational Leadership degree (K-12 Administration track) from Mississippi College is designed to meet the needs of educational professionals seeking a higher level of licensure in school administration or an entry-level licensure in school administration that builds on an existing AA licensure in another area of professional education.

Educators in this 41-hour online education program must pass the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA) in Mississippi or the parallel requirement in their state, before they can be approved to graduate and apply to obtain a Class AAA license in Administration. If students cannot pass the SLLA the semester before they graduate or choose not to take it, they can switch to the Ed.S. in Educational Leadership – Curriculum & Instruction (C&I) track, and by completing a minimum of 8 additional hours, can graduate with the Ed.S. Ed Leadership – C&I track.

Licensure Assessment
Candidates in the Ed.S. in Educational Leadership – K-12 Administration track must pass the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA) in Mississippi or the parallel requirement in their state, before they can be approved to graduate and apply to obtain a Class AAA license in Administration.
If students cannot pass the SLLA the semester before they graduate or choose not to take it, they can switch to the Ed.S. in Educational Leadership – Curriculum & Instruction (C&I) track, and complete an additional 8 hours minimum, in order to graduate in the Ed.S. Ed Leadership – C&I track.
To complete the Education Specialist in Educational Leadership – K-12 Administration track online program, Students must complete 16 semester hours of core courses, 17 semester hours of anchor courses and 8 semester hours of Administrative courses for a total of 41 credit hours.
EDU 7499: Intro to Ed Leadership
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
The introductory course serves to orient students about the graduate expectations at Miss College, the EDS guidelines in Teacher Education and Leadership (TEL), the usage of the Statistical Software Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), licensure and SLLA mandates, action research expectations and topic selection, practicum-internship guidelines, TK20-Watermark purchase and orientation on the usage for online portfolio development and data collection, and the TEL's graduation policies.
EDU 7500: Directed Research Project Continuation for Advanced Educational Research Applications
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 1
The continuation in advanced educational research is the application of the students' theoretical plans made in EDU 7501. Further, the introduction chapter, which supports the approved topic, and the literature review, which is written from peer-reviewed empirical research, are reviewed. Thereafter, the methodology is built around approved research questions and directed hypothesis testing. The expectation is for students to implement their research plans, complete the data collection, complete the data analysis using SPSS, and make conclusions based on their research findings. A final grade is issued in EDU 7500, after all expectations for the course have been successfully completed. A letter grade is issued in EDU 7501, after EDU 7500 has been successfully completed.
EDU 7545: Statistical Methods & Testing
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Statistics Methods will be investigated with a basic review of statistical measures, variable relations, inferences about variables, multiple comparisons of data, and trend analyses. Additionally, there will be a focus on case study analyses and synthesis activities for the further development of skills in statistical problem solving using SPSS (Statistical Software Package for the Social Sciences).
EDU 6505: Engaged Learning
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Engaged Learning will provide an emphasis on creating learning opportunities that address the brain’s need for meaning, patterns and connections. While addressing appropriate levels of learning, age-appropriate teaching strategies and the science of learning, teachers will focus on creating a classroom climate conducive to learning for all students. Topics will also include concepts of teaching, learner characteristics, learning environment designs and effective teaching. Research in cognition, learning and teaching will form the foundation for the course.
EDU 6520: Basics of Effective Leadership
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
A study of the knowledge, skills and values that are necessary to identify organizational constructs, develop a vision and purpose with others for the organization, and exercise leadership processes to achieve the common goals for the organization.
EDU 6521: School and Community Effectiveness
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
A study of the elements and concepts of administering fiscal, physical and human resources within an organization. The importance of effective communication with the various cultures in the community to build school structures is emphasized.
EDU 7501: Advanced Research Applications
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
Advanced study of research designs and development of research projects at the school-district level to develop skills related to writing research reports, project proposals, self-studies and grant writing. In subsequent semesters, students will enroll in EDU 7500 until the research project is complete. Until completion, a letter grade of (PR) will be given for EDU 7501.
Students will only take EDU 7499 during first 7-week term. Students will only take EDU 7500 during final 7-week term or until Advanced Action Research paper is completed. A "Credit"/"No Credit" grade can be earned in EDU 7499 and EDU 7500 and they must be successfully completed prior to receiving clearance to graduate.
EDU 7541: Legal Structures & Legal Issues

A study of the interrelationships among federal, judicial, state and local governing structures that affect the decision and judgment parameters of operating a school district and the impact of emerging legal issues on future educational policies.

The practicum courses are designed to provide field-based experiences for Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) students. Specific field experiences will be assigned for each of the required courses in the Ed.S. Program.
EDU 7531: Seminar in Current Educational Leadership Dilemmas
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
An exploration of current educational problems affecting the development of future educational-policy formation and educational-management decisions at the school and district levels.
EDU 7561: Data-Driven Decision-Making
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
This course is designed to prepare instructional leaders who demonstrate the knowledge, skills and dispositions essential to effective professional practice in data-driven decision-making. The goal of the course is to develop competencies in the area of using a wide variety of data to make effective decisions at the building and district levels.

An in-depth study of personnel management areas that include the policies, organizational structures, recruitment, selection, compensation, development, evaluation, reward structures and termination issues of an effective personnel organization.
EDU 7540: Basics of School Finance
Duration: 7 weeks | Credit Hours: 3
An in-depth study of the historical significance of funding sources, distribution formulas and accounting for expenditures to include application of sound principles of fiscal management at the school, district and state levels.
EDU 7550: Central Office Structures, Roles and Responsibilities and the Roles and Functions of the Superintendency

An in-depth study of the roles, functions and organizational structures of the school district central office staff and the leadership skills employed in implementing instructional programs, state and federal programs, and the operational programs of the school district.
